The Historic Tree at Solterra Texas
The Impact of the May 28, 2024 Storm on Solterra’s Historic Tree
A strong storm recently hit the DFW area, bringing straight-line winds over 80 mph. These winds severely damaged the Solterra treehouse and its supporting Red Oak tree. The storm twisted the tree’s limbs, causing splits in the trunk and serious damage to the tree’s canopy. The treehouse, a favorite spot for community gatherings and children’s play, also suffered damage. Falling limbs broke several boards on the handrails and deck, and the lookout platform was heavily impacted.
Commitment to Preserving Solterra’s Beloved Tree
Despite the damage, Solterra Texas, Huffines Communities were fully committed to preserving this historic tree and its treehouse. Huffines Communities knew how important the tree was—not just as a landmark, but as a symbol of the community’s strength and values. Understanding this, they made the tree’s restoration a top priority. Extensive repair efforts were launched to protect the tree and restore the treehouse to its former glory.
“For the most part, the repairs were fairly easy we just had to make an inventory of the boards and structural components damaged by the falling limbs then copy them and reinstall. The challenge came when rebuilding the lookout because half of what held it up is gone, so to overcome this, I enlarged it and added legs that support half of the platform, and the other half is still supported by the tree. Because some of the tree canopy was destroyed, I added a roof to the lookout to provide shade but also fill some of the void.” -Jerry Burkard, Construction Manager
Expert Consultations and Restoration Plan for the Solterra Tree
To ensure the best possible outcome for this cherished tree, Solterra Texas consulted with several expert arborists and developed a comprehensive restoration plan. The construction plan involves several items:
- Installing a Brace: The team is implementing a brace system to support the weight of the remaining limbs. This system will reduce the strain on the damaged trunk and help stabilize the tree, ensuring its longevity.
- Securing the Trunk: After lifting the limbs, workers will realign the cracks in the trunk and secure it with large stainless steel bolts. This process will promote healing and stability, giving the tree the best chance to recover.
- Lookout Platform: Redesigning and reconfiguring the lookout platform to fit the remaining limbs, preserving the treehouse’s functionality and charm.
