Solterra Texas Celebrates Earth Day with Native Tree Farm

In celebration of Earth Day and a deep commitment to eco-conscious development, Solterra Texas—a master-planned community by Huffines Communities in Mesquite, Texas—is bringing its green vision to life through a unique and impactful initiative: an on-site three-acre tree farm.

Preserving Trees and Creating Shade Naturally

Nestled in the heart of Mesquite, Texas, the 1,500-acre Solterra development continues to grow with new phases of homes, parks, and open spaces. But rather than stripping the land of its natural assets, Huffines Communities took a different route—literally digging in to save hundreds of native trees. Since 2021, the developer has been nurturing a tree farm to replant mature elms, pecans, oaks, ashes, and native pear trees across the community.

By relocating 450 trees before construction began, Huffines ensured not only the survival of native species but also created instant shade for walking trails, parks, and home lots. These trees, having grown in the local soil, are thriving where they belong, with a survival rate far higher than store-bought nursery trees. And thanks to years of care, many now measure up to 26 feet tall.

Planning with Purpose: Trees That Are Grown, Not Just Planted

Unlike typical development practices, Huffines Communities chose to recycle the land’s existing resources, working with arborists and consultants to care for and transplant mature trees. The results speak for themselves—not only visually, but also environmentally. Trees grown at the Solterra farm are larger, healthier, and immediately impactful for residents and the local ecosystem.

As Edward Beecherl, Project Manager at Huffines, explains:

“The trees are already accustomed to the soil and weather of this area. That gives them a much better chance of surviving and thriving.”

With 5- to 6-inch caliper trunks, these home-grown trees offer instant canopy coverage, helping cool outdoor spaces faster while adding to Solterra’s lush, park-like aesthetic.

Green Goals Beyond Earth Day

Solterra’s tree initiative is more than a one-time Earth Day gesture—it’s a symbol of Huffines Communities’ ongoing commitment to sustainability. Across all its projects, the company enforces strict tree-planting guidelines, typically requiring multiple trees per home lot in addition to lush park landscaping.

In total, Solterra will feature over 4,000 trees, many of which originate from the on-site tree farm. One standout is the majestic oak anchoring the Lookout Treehouse Park—a beloved feature designed specifically to protect and celebrate a 100-year-old oak tree.

Inspiring a Greener Future

The success of Solterra’s tree farm is influencing other Huffines projects, including Lakesong, Horizon Lakes, and Serenade, which are currently being evaluated for similar on-site tree preservation efforts. It’s clear that Huffines Communities is setting a new standard for eco-conscious master planning—one tree at a time.
